Attracting birds to feeders in your yard is as simple as buying a feeder and seed, hanging and waiting to see your first guests. If you want to attract certain species, provide thistle, millet and sunflower hearts for Finches. Many birds prefer sunflowers and still even more will be excited about peanuts. I buy a seed mixture for one feeder, plus the Goldfinches favorites to provide in a separate feeder and then hang suet, made by melting fat and goodies and then letting harden, for the Woodpeckers and many others species that enjoy it. The winter landscape is sometimes harsh, you will be rewarded by helping our feathered friends out with their diet with their beauty and antics.
