What is a Woman?
The question most asked these days is the definition of a woman. It is debated in the streets as well as the halls of government. What is a woman?
We look to the Authority of the Scriptures for the answer. In Genesis 2:7 is the creation of man. “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Man is created as a triune being, body, soul, and spirit. God places the man in the Garden of Eden and puts him to work “to dress and keep it”. Adam is also an expert in zoology and he names all the animals.
Up to this point in Adam’s first day of life he has been busy, but he does not have a mate as all the other creatures. God, in His infinite wisdom, has already made plans for Adam’s mate.
In the King James bible we read in Genesis 2:18 “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” That simple phrase “help meet” is the definition of a woman.
In the vernacular of today “help meet” does not make much sense. The Websters 1838 dictionary sheds much light on the meaning here.
“Meet” is not used in the tense as “a face to face meeting” but rather used as an adjective meaning “Fit; suitable; proper; qualified; convenient; adapted.”
She is “Fit” means the female is “becoming” to the male. She becomes his world of desire.
She is “suitable” meaning the female is “Adequate” to meet the needs of the male. Nothing else will do to fulfill his desires.
She is “proper” meaning the female is joined to the male as his own. Not as property, but as to the essence of his being.
She is “qualified” meaning the female is the only choice to complete the man. Nothing else will do.
She is “convenient” meaning that the female is adapted to use or to wants. Man cannot complete the circle of life without the female, conversely, the female cannot complete the circle of life without the male.
She is “adapted” meaning the female is created by God as a suitable creation to complete the man.
The creation of woman was God’s final creative act during the week of creation. She was fashioned from Adam’s rib as a sign she is to be near the heart of the man. She completes the man as the man completes her.
The marriage of Adam and Eve is found in Genesis 2 along with Adam’s wedding vow: Genesis 2:23-24 “And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Adam and Eve became a unified pair. Jesus said of marriage in Matthew 19:4- 6 “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Once joined in marriage, the man and the woman become a unified pair becoming one heart, one mind, one spirit, and one body. Their purpose is to honor God while embracing a future together for His glory.
